5 Ways to Keep Your Kids Happy (and Safe!) During FIT4MOM Classes

As we celebrate Safety Month, we continue our focus on Stroller Safety with 5 ways to keep your kids happy (and safe) during class.

Whether you're a seasoned FIT4MOM member or attending your first class, bringing your little ones along for your workout can be a rewarding—and sometimes challenging—experience. But with a few simple strategies, you can keep your kids content while ensuring everyone stays safe and focused. Here are 5 tips to help keep your stroller-bound kiddos and older kids happy during class!

1. Pack Smart Entertainment

For babies and toddlers in the stroller, pack a variety of small, safe toys to rotate throughout class. Think teething rings, board books, or soft dolls. Even something as simple as a favorite snack cup or musical toy can be just the distraction they need while you push through your cardio and strength sets.

Pro Tip: Keep a “class bag” in the car with fresh toys, snacks, and wipes so you’re always ready to go.

2. Use a Designated Spot for Older Kids

Older children who no longer ride in a stroller can still be part of the experience! Set them up next to you during stations with a yoga mat, towel, or small folding chair. This gives them a sense of ownership and routine—and helps them understand that they have a special “job” during class too.

Ideas for Older Kids:

  • Coloring books

  • Sticker activities

  • Water painting

  • Listening to audiobooks on kid-safe headphones

  • Sit older kids next to each other for fun and friendship - maybe even bring games they can play together

Does your kiddo enjoy younger kids? Bring some bubbles and books and let them help entertain the littles!

3. Keep Moving Between Stations

When transitioning from one station to another, older kids can walk right alongside you. This is a great way to keep them involved and moving, without disrupting the flow of class. Remind them that staying close to you is part of their “workout job”—just like mom is staying with her group!

For little kids, point out things along the way, playing eye spy or just acknowledging nature and the world around.

Between stations is also a great time to check if your kids need snacks or water so that once you get to the next station everyone is ready to go!

4. Create a Routine

Kids thrive on routine. Establish a simple pre-class ritual: buckle in, hand out toys/snacks, say a positive affirmation (“It’s time for Mom’s strong class!”), and review the class rules. When kids know what to expect, they’re more likely to stay calm and cooperative.

Most importantly, find a routine that works for you and your kids!

5. Celebrate Their Cooperation

Throughout and after class, take a moment to praise your child for doing such a great job. Whether they sat quietly, walked next to you, or played nicely in their space, let them know you noticed. A sticker chart, small reward, or even just a big high-five can go a long way in reinforcing good behavior.

Bonus: Remember that you can lean on your village!

Somedays are hard, and we get it. We are moms, too! Ask your instructor for help if you need it. Trade toys or snack with a fellow mom who may be looking for another option for their kiddo. We know that we are always stronger together!

While keeping kids happy is important, stroller safety is absolutely essential—for them, for you, and for the entire group.

Here’s why:

  • Strapped in = Safe. All children in strollers must remain buckled in at all times during class. This prevents falls, injuries, or wandering.

  • Walking kids stay with mom. Older kids must remain right next to mom—on a mat or towel at stations and by her side while walking. This isn’t just about following rules—it’s about avoiding distractions, ensuring focus, and preventing accidents.

  • It’s for everyone. Safety protocols are in place not just for your child, but to keep all moms and kids in class safe. Plus, adhering to these guidelines protects FIT4MOM leaders and participants from liability issues.

  • We share the park. Our parks are not just for us - there are other people enjoying the park, running trails, riding bikes, etc. and we want to not only show others consideration, but also to keep ourselves and our kiddos safe!

When everyone follows these simple guidelines, you can focus on what matters most: building strength, connecting with your community, and modeling healthy habits for your little ones.

You've got this, mama. Your workout matters—just like your family's safety.
